In 1876 Tsar Alexander II asked Louis Roederer to reserve the best champagne for him every year.  Fearing assassination, the Tzar ordered Roederer to bottle the champagnes in clear glass bottles with no concave punt under the bottle, so explosives could not be concealed.  Since 1876 Roederer has named these choice champagnes "Cristal" after the clear glass.
